Welcome to 'Beyond AI Regulation'

Artificial Intelligence is in the path of affecting almost everything. Curiously, regulation also touches almost everything businesses, consumers and people do.

That is why regulation is a key asset—not an obstacle— for those countries trying to get better results from AI. Bad AI regulation means failures, risks and being left behind. Good AI regulation does not only mean better AI results. It means a way to achieve positive transformation beyond what AI can offer.

However, governments usually struggle to regulate well. Even countries with a good track history, turn around 180 degrees and regress on the good regulatory practices they had built.

Why? Because regulating is not easy. Because regulating AI is way more difficult. The technology moves faster than policy and regulation will ever do. It is also a powerful tool of control from a political, media, financial and military perspective.

That is why many groups want to influence how it is regulated, how it is governed locally and in other countries—a type of subtle corruption called state capture.

If you follow the news and decisions about AI and AI regulation, I am sure you hear a lot of noise, see a lot of inconsistencies and perceive "non-sense" in what is happening. If you are in those rooms where decision are made, you understand the 'why' and politics behind those decisions.

Most people are not in those rooms. They do not have to be. But they need to know a simple and clear idea: politics cannot offer the world the best results we can get from AI, better public policies can. Good regulations are part of better public policies.

That is what I want to discuss here in "Beyond AI Regulation." The issues that are underneath today's AI regulatory decisions.

This is a place where you will find insights, simple frameworks and tools that can help you clear out the noise from what you hear in the news. My goal for you: to give you clarity to see things as they are, when it comes to regulatory decisions.

I will be sharing my analysis and views acquired after many years of listening to governments, firms, business associations and local stakeholders to help them create better regulatory and business environments in their countries.

I will also introduce new tools, frameworks and initiatives I am creating for you, like the Better Regulation Test and the BRAIn Canvas.

By the way, my name is Alfredo González Briseño. I wrote Better Regulations, Better AI Results because I believe that ‘how’ regulation is planned, designed, communicated, implemented and updated, matters more than ‘what’ is regulated.

That is also why I created fAIrly simple: to help organizations search, analyze, and get clarity on the regulations that affect them, in a way that’s fairly simple.

Regulation is not an obstacle to innovation. Done well, it creates the clarity and trust that governments, companies, and citizens need to move forward responsibly.

There is more to talk about this, so stay tuned, get updates and keep coming back to "Beyond AI Regulation."
